Filter Changes

You bought a filter that says it lasts three months, and now you are wondering if that means three months in Florida too. Short answer: usually no. Our systems run most of the year, so filters load up faster here than the box assumes. Here is how we tell homeowners to think about it, and what a neglected filter actually costs you down the line.

What a Dirty Filter Does Over Time

A clogged filter starves the blower of air, and everything downstream suffers. First the air coming out of the vents gets weaker, so the system runs longer to hit the same temperature. Longer runtime means more hours on the blower motor, more hours on the compressor, and more wear on the contactor. Then the evaporator coil starts to freeze because there is not enough warm air moving across it. Once ice forms, cooling drops off completely and meltwater can overflow the drain pan. We have pulled filters so packed they had bowed into the return and let dirt bypass straight onto the coil, which then needs a proper cleaning, not a filter swap.

The Habit That Prevents All of It

Pick a day and put it on your phone. The first of the month, look at the filter. You do not have to change it every time, you just have to look at it. Hold it up to a light. If you cannot see light through the pleats, it is done. If you can, put it back and look again next month. That one minute is the whole system. Buy filters four or six at a time so there is never a stretch where you skip it because the shelf is empty. Write the date on the cardboard edge with a marker when you install it, so there is no guessing later.

How Often, Realistically

For most homes across Florida running a one inch pleated filter, every thirty to sixty days is the honest range. If you have pets that shed, one or two people with allergies, or you are doing any renovation work, treat thirty days as the ceiling. Homes with no pets, no smokers, and doors that stay shut can often stretch to sixty. Four and five inch media filters mounted at the air handler are different, and those genuinely go six months to a year depending on the home. Coastal properties across the region tend to run dirtier because salt air and fine grit find their way into returns.

Warning Signs You Are Already Past Due

Weak airflow at the registers is the first one, especially in the rooms furthest from the air handler. Then you notice the system running much longer than it used to, or barely cycling off at all during the afternoon. Dust settling on furniture faster than it should is another. If you see ice on the copper lines outside or at the indoor coil, shut the cooling off at the thermostat, leave the fan running to thaw it, and call us. Water around the air handler or a ceiling stain below it usually means the pan overflowed. At that point a new filter alone will not fix what is already happening.

When a Filter Change Is Not the Answer

If you have put in a clean filter and airflow is still poor, something else is going on. A dirty evaporator coil, a failing blower capacitor, a clogged condensate drain, or duct that has come loose in the attic all look similar from the vent. Refrigerant charge problems also mimic a filter issue. Those need someone with gauges and meters, not another trip to the store. We handle air conditioning repair and heating repair across Florida, and diagnosing a weak airflow complaint is routine work for us. Call us and describe what you are seeing, including how long since the filter went in.

Filter Changes — common questions

Does a more expensive, denser filter help my AC?

Not always. Very dense filters restrict airflow in systems that were not designed for them, which causes the same strain as a dirty filter. A mid range pleated filter changed on schedule usually serves a home better than a thick one left in too long.

Should I change the filter more often in summer?

Yes. Runtime drives how much air passes through the filter, and in Florida the cooling season is long and hard on filters. Check monthly year round, but expect to be replacing more often from roughly May through October.

Can I run the system with no filter for a day?

We would rather you did not. Even one day lets dust and hair land directly on the evaporator coil and blower wheel, and that buildup does not come off on its own. If you are out of filters, keep the run time short.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form with what you hear, smell or feel. Warm air, ice on the lineset, a humming outdoor unit. That detail helps us load the right parts before we drive out.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

We check the thermostat, the air handler, the condenser and the electrical side, then measure what the system is actually doing. You get a plain explanation of the fault and the repair options before we start.

  3. Step 3

    We repair and verify

Once the repair is done we run the system and confirm temperature split, drainage and airflow at the vents. If a part is on order, we tell you the timeline instead of leaving you guessing.

Why homeowners call us

  • We plan for salt airCoastal humidity and salt eat coils, contactors and cabinet screws. We look for corrosion during every visit and treat it as part of the diagnosis, not an afterthought, so a repaired system does not fail again in the same spot.
  • Built for constant runtimeFlorida systems run most of the year, so bearings, capacitors and drain lines wear faster than the manual suggests. We size repairs around that reality and point out the components likely to be next in line.
  • Old houses and new onesIsland properties often hide ductwork in tight, damp spaces, while tract homes tend to have short, undersized returns. We have worked both and adjust the approach rather than forcing one standard fix.
  • Clear talk, no upsell theatreWe tell you what failed, what it takes to fix it, and whether repair or replacement makes more sense for the age of the equipment. If a repair will hold, we say so and get on with it.
  • All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York and the rest.
  • Straight answersWhen a replacement beats a repair, we tell you, sometimes before we roll a truck.
